A Day of Changes

Well, one change, really.  I have finally gotten around to changing blogs.  Xanga has been rather getting on my nerves these last months, and so...

http://www.rejoicingsojourner.wordpress.com

Visit and let me know what you think.  One fun thing is that you don't have to be a WordPress blogger to comment...  so all of my nonxanga readers, have at it.  I'd love to hear from you.

This site will stay up (for now, at least), because I'm sure you all like to read about my past life.

Stay in touch!

Freshly Fallen Snow

I love having a white New Year's.  There's something about getting up on January 2 and seeing all of that beautiful white snow all around, perfect, clean, unbroken--that inspires me.  What kind of tracks will I leave in 2008?

Admittedly, some of 2007's tracks weren't so good.  They have meandered off the path, and followed completely selfish paths of my own.

Another interesting things about tracks...  people tend to follow them.  I left some tracks in 2007, and am now reaping the sorrow of seeing someone else follow them...

I was happy to open the door at midnight New Year's Eve to kick out 2007 and welcome in 2008.  It's a clean slate, a new beginning, a fresh start...  newfallen snow.

My resolution for 2008 is to set monthly resolutions.    After all, you're more likely to acheive your goals if you set them low.  And just to show how low I'm setting them, I'll confess that one of my January resolutions is to make my bed every day.  Baby steps, my friends, baby steps.

On another, slightly more random note, today has been a fantastic day.  I did not have to go to work; I did not go to the farm; in fact, other than stepping across the road to our mailbox, I have not left our property all day.  I only changed out of my pajamas because I wanted to take a walk.  Gosh, life is good.

I am reading several books right now, as usual.  One of them is The Pursuit of God by A.W. Tozer (no "I" in that guy's name...  I was astounded to discover this fact).  It is a really excellent book.  Simple to understand...  isn't it amazing how most of God's truths are, in fact, simple?  He does not attempt to confuse or muddle us, to mislead us so that He can later laugh at us and our stupidity.  Instead, He lays things out carefully and clearly, making it so easy that even fools like us can grasp it.  It's sort of pathetic that we spend most of our time doing our best to make Him more difficult to understand than He really is.

Anyway, another resolution of mine is to learn some old hymns.  I think they are rather neglected these days, and they hold so many great truths!  It's more exciting if we actually learn something about the people that wrote them along the way, so stay posted for exciting hymnal history.

We'll see what happens in 2008.  There's a world of pretty much limitless opportunities out there.  Time to start making some tracks.

Wisdom for Those Who Seek It

Today I was reading Proverbs.  I think it's a great book, because I enjoy contrasts, and that is what Proverbs is all about.  A wise person does this, but a fool does this; consequently a wise person gets this and a fool gets this.  The other great thing about Proverbs is that people always get what they deserve.

But today I was inspired to make some lists.  I think that lists are one of the greatest inventions ever.  I make them all the time.  I love to check things off of them.  And I enjoy using them to help me sift through information.  So today, I analyzed the first eight chapters of Proverbs, and came up with some lists, which I am going to share now...

Wisdom Gives
~Prudence ~ Knowledge ~ Fear of the Lord ~ Knowledge of God ~ Understanding ~ Security ~ Long life ~ Peace ~ Favor ~ Good repute ~ Healing ~ Prosperity ~ Honor ~ Confidence ~ Grace ~ Beauty ~ Light ~ Direction ~ Health ~ Discipline ~ Love ~ Rest ~ Protection ~ Favor from God ~

Foolishness Earns
~
Death ~ Calamity ~ Dread ~ Distress ~ Anguish ~ Destruction ~ Bitterness ~ Ruin ~ Poverty ~ Brokenness ~ Reproach ~ Injury ~ Insecurity ~ Fear ~ Confusion ~ Sleeplessness ~ Lack of protection ~ Darkness ~ Instability ~ Disgrace ~ Need ~ Punishment ~ Vengenance

So obviously, if we look at these two lists, one would prefer the results of wisdom over the results of foolishness, right?  Who wouldn't rather have rest and protection over death and confusion?

The next question is simple:  What must we do to earn wisdom?  Luckily for you, I made another list:

In order to find wisdom we must...
seek, acquire, prize, love, embrace, and guard it.  We must take hold of wisdom, hold her fast, bind her on our fingers, call her our friend, and write her on the tablet of our hearts.

Well, okay, so that *sounds* good, but how does that boil down in practical terms?  Don't panic...  two more lists will set you well on your way:

A Fool:
~follows fools
~rejects instruction
~hastens to evil
~scoffs at wisdom
~enjoys being simple-minded
~hates knowledge
~neglects counsel
~rejects discipline
~loathes reproof
~is stingy
~is argumentative
~lies
~wanders from the path
~gives in to temptation
~is dissatisfied with his wife
~is lazy
~spreads strife

A Wise Person:
~receives instruction
~seeks understanding
~accepts reproof
~treasures commandments
~binds kindness and truth to himself
~trusts the Lord
~acknowledges God
~is humble
~fears the Lord
~turns away from evil
~honors the Lord through sacrifice
~accepts discipline
~is generous
~is peaceful
~speaks truth
~focuses on where he is going
~avoids immoral people
~loves his wife
~is industrious

So yeah, I got done reading all of that this morning, and realized that, more often than not, I'm pretty foolish.  I'm stubborn and prideful frequently.  So my lists are a challenge to me, and I hope that you will accept the challenge as well.  If we wish to have the benefits of wisdom, we must be willing to take the steps to become a wise person.

The Foundation is Laid

I think my favorite part about Christmas is how it ties everything together.  It brings together rich and poor, godly and ungodly, kings and shepherds, God and man.  The story of Christmas is the laying of a bridge's foundation, which is later completed with the cross.

My other favorite part about Christmas is that it takes place in a barn.  I love barns.  And I love the way that our Savior's first breath inhaled the scent of dust and hay, cows and sheep, sweat and straw.  That He ate His first meal admist the rustling of mice, cows chewing their cud, cats prowling, and sparrows in the rafters grousing about the disruptive noise.

While we're focused on my favorite things, I think I'll leave you with the lyrics to my favorite Christmas carol.  Carols are rather transient things, with "traditional" lyrics and melodies that change over time.  When I originally learned this carol, I learned words that are apparently not very common, because parts of it I never hear anywhere else, even when we sing this one in church.  But part of the reason I love this carol so much is that it reminds us, strongly, that the entire reason this Baby's birth was important was because of the way--and the reason--He was going to die.

Merry Christmas, friends.  May you clearly see God's love for you, especially for you, during this special time.

What Child is this, who laid to rest
On Mary's lap is sleeping--
Whom angels greet with anthems sweet
And shepherds' watch is keeping?
This, this is Christ the King
Whom shepherds watch and angels sing
Haste, haste to bring Him laud
The Babe, the Son of Mary.

Why lies He here in such mean estate
Where ox and ass are feeding?
Good Christian fear, for sinners near
The Silent Word is pleading
Nails, spear shall pierce Him through;
The cross be borne for me, for you.
Hail, hail!  The Word made flesh!
The Babe, the Son of Mary.

So bring Him incense, gold and myrrh;
Come peasant, king, to own Him.
The King of kings salvation brings;
Let loving hearts enthrone Him.
Raise, raise the song on high!
The Virgin sings her lullabye
Joy, joy!  For Christ is born,
The Babe, the Son of Mary.

A friend sent me this link a while back.  I came on it again today and it made me laugh.  So go read it.  Now!
